In partnership with Hui o Koʻolaupoko and the Surfrider Foundation Oʻahu Chapter, REDI led the design-build retrofit of three existing landscaped areas at Windward Mall into functional bioretention systems (rain gardens). These systems are designed to capture, treat, and recharge stormwater runoff from portions of the mall’s parking lots. As part of the project, REDI staff and Hui o Koʻolaupoko hosted a community day to engage local residents in learning about rain gardens and native plants, while also providing hands-on opportunities to help plant the systems on-site.
