REDI provided strategic water master planning to identify sustainable onsite stormwater and wastewater management strategies for Kokua Hawaii Foundation’s new Haleiwa commercial property-backyard farm. This redevelopment of the property will include offices, a commercial kitchen and a farm stand for selling their products and goods. At the core of Kokua Hawaii Foundation mission is aina-based education. Onsite water management strategies will be demonstrated as a showcase for student groups and community members to learn about green infrastructure and sustainable practices that they can integrate at their own properties. Examples of these include rainwater harvesting, rain gardens and greywater gardens. In addition, innovative onsite wastewater treatment options are being evaluated to treat and manage the facilities’ backwater.
