In partnership with the Water Institute for Sustainability Education (WISE), the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College, and Tri-Isle RC&D, REDI led the design-build of an educational rain garden that captures and recharges stormwater from an adjacent campus building. Located at the heart of the SLIM Community Garden, the rain garden showcases the integration of local food production with ecological stormwater management. Planted with native Hawaiian species, the system is designed to treat and infiltrate up to 270,000 gallons of stormwater annually on-site. As part of the project’s educational mission, REDI also facilitated a two-day professional development workshop for Maui-based K–12 educators, focused on integrated water resource management, rain garden design, and strategies for implementing similar projects on school campuses.
